MANILA, Philippines — The last day of January will be rainy in some parts of the country due to the northeast monsoon, easterlies, and shear line, according to the state weather bureau on Friday.

In the 4 a.m. weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, weather specialist Benison Estareja said that the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” will continue to prevail in Northern and Central Luzon.

“Asahan pa rin ang minsang malakas na ulan dito sa Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, lalawigan ng Aurora, at Quezon. Posibleng umabot sa 100 millimeters ang pag-ulan sa eastern portion ng Cagayan, eastern portion ng Isabela, at hilagang bahagi ng Aurora,” Estareja said.

(Expect chances of heavy rains in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora province, and Quezon. 100 millimeters of rain is possible in the eastern portions of Cagayan, Isabela, and the northern portion of Aurora.)

Estareja noted that the Ilocos Region, the rest of Central Luzon, Metro Manila, and Rizal will also bear the effects of the northeast monsoon, such as partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rains.

“Kaya asahan na minsa’y kumukulimlim ang panahon at sasamahan din nito ng mahihinang ulan lalo sa Metro Manila, Rizal, gayundin sa Bulacan at Nueva Ecija,” he added.

Meanwhile, parts of Calabarzon [Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon], the Bicol Region, and Mimaropa [Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan] will experience chance rains and thunderstorms due to the easterlies, or the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean. He added that the effect of easterlies weakened over these areas compared to the past three days.

Further, central and southern portions of Palawan will still be rainy due to the easterlies, while fair weather conditions are expected over the west and central portions of Visayas.

“Sa eastern Visayas, mababawasan ang pag-ulan epekto ng humihinang shear line, plus the easterlies na nangingibabaw na weather system. May tyansa lang po ng pulo-pulong pag-ulan, pagkidlat, at pagkulog,” Estareja stated.

(Chances of rain in the eastern Visayas will lessen due to the weakening effect of the shear line, plus the easterlies as the prevailing weather system. There are chances of scattered rains and thunderstorms.)

Lastly, fair weather conditions will prevail in Mindanao in the morning and noontime. Meanwhile, some parts, such as the Caraga and Davao regions, will experience light rains that will persist in the afternoon and evening for one to two hours due to thunderstorms.

Estareja said that a gale warning is hoisted, and setting sail is dangerous over the following coastal areas brought by the effects of the northeast monsoon:

The weather specialist also mentioned that no low-pressure area or weather disturbance is being monitored and expected for the first few days of February.
