Classes suspended in Sorsogon towns due to heavy rains
SANTA MAGDALENA, SORSOGON — Heavy rains caused by the shear line prompted class suspensions in some towns in Sorsogon province on Thursday, Jan. 30.
The local government units of seven towns issued suspension orders as early as Wednesday night, Jan. 29, following the state weather bureau’s forecast anticipating heavy to intense rains.
In Sorsogon City, the provincial capital, classes at all levels in both public and private schools were suspended.
The towns of Matnog, Casiguran, and Pilar also ordered the cancellation of classes in both public and private schools within their jurisdictions.
In Castilla town, classes at all levels and work transactions in both public and private schools were also suspended.
Meanwhile, Mayor Maria Elena Ramona Ragrario of Magallanes town encouraged schools to adopt asynchronous classes to “ensure the safety and well-being of students.”
In Donsol town, Mayor Teodoro De Guzman also suspended classes at all levels, although it was not specified in the advisory whether it covers both private and public schools.
Teodoro also imposed a “no sailing policy” due to rough sea conditions while also prohibiting residents from crossing swelling rivers.
A red rainfall warning has been raised over Sorsogon since 11 p.m. on Wednesday since the weather is posing high chances of flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
