MANILA, Philippines – Lead defense council former Justice Serafin is confident that Chief Justice Renato Corona will get an acquittal from the Senate acting as the impeachment court, which is expected to come out with its verdict Tuesday.

In a chance interview, Cuevas said they have “put up a good fight” throughout the 43 days of impeachment trial at the Senate.

“We put up a good fight, legally and so on, in accordance with the law and the constitution. We are very much confident and optimistic that we will get an acquittal,” Cuevas told reporters shortly before the impeachment trial resumed.

However, when asked what their next move would be if ever the Senates decision would not be in their favor, Cuevas said they were still studying this.

Cuevas was quoted in saying that they would bring the case to the Supreme Court if Corona was convicted.

“We are still studying that. He [Corona] is beleaguered,” Cuevas said.

When asked if he has spoken with the chief justice before coming to the Senate, Cuevas said yes but refused to divulge the contents of their conversation.
