Phivolcs issues Ilokano earthquake sourcebook for disaster preparedness
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has made disaster preparedness more accessible by launching an Ilokano earthquake sourcebook on Tuesday.
According to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the sourcebook is part of the Disaster Narratives for Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication (DANAS) Project.
The agency said it was developed in collaboration with Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in La Union and the University of the Philippines Visayas in Iloilo.
“The sourcebook, accompanied by video materials, is based on personal narratives and experiences shared by local communities in Northern and Central Luzon who have experienced earthquakes and tsunamis,” the DOST said in a statement.
By using the Ilocano language, the project ensures disaster information is culturally relevant and accessible to communities, it added.

“This aligns with DOST-Phivolcs’ ongoing efforts to make scientific knowledge accessible and actionable for diverse communities,” the agency further underscored.
The project aims to improve disaster resilience by integrating community-driven narratives and everyday language into public communication and capacity-building initiatives, it added.
