MANILA, Philippines — Four weather systems are expected to bring overcast skies and rains to various parts of the country on Monday, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

In a morning forecast, Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina identified the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the northeast monsoon or amihan, the shear line, and localized thunderstorms as the four weather systems affecting the country.

Badrina explained that the northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies and rains in Northern Luzon, specifically in Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

“Itong northeast monsoon o hanging amihan ay magdadala pa rin ng maulap na kalangitan at mga pag-ulan, partikular na sa may bahagi ng Cagayan Valley Region at ng Cordillera,” he said in the 4 a.m. weathercast.

Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains are also expected in Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon due to the northeast monsoon, Pagasa added.

Meanwhile, the shear line, caused by the convergence of warm easterlies and cold northeast monsoon, will influence the weather in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Quezon and Aurora, according to Badrina.

“Inaasahan natin ang malaking tsansa ng mga pag-ulan, partikular na sa may bahagi ng Aurora, Quezon, gayundin sa may area ng Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, ilang bahagi din po ng Oriental Mindoro, kasama yung Marinduque,” he noted.

“’Yan ay dulot ng shear line o ‘yung banggaan ng mainit at malamig na hangin,” the state weather specialist explained.

(This is due to the shear line or the convergence of warm and cold winds.)

The ITCZ will cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms in Eastern Visayas and Caraga and Davao Region in Mindanao.

“Sa ating latest satellite image, makikita nga natin may mga kaulapan na nagdadala ng mga pag-ulan, partikular na dito sa may silangang bahagi ng Visayas at Mindanao. Ito ay bahagi ng intertropical convergence zone,” he emphasized.

(In our latest satellite image, we can see cloud formations bringing rain, particularly over the eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao. This is part of the intertropical convergence zone.)

The rest of Visayas and Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms also due to the ITCZ.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms, the state weather bureau added.

Pagasa likewise hoisted a gale warning in the seaboards of Batanes and Babuyan Islands due to the northeast monsoon.
