COTABATO CITY, Philippines – A barangay chair in Maguindanao del Sur was killed by still unidentified armed men inside his residence in Datu Salibo town on Friday afternoon, police said.

Lt. Victor Lim, chief of the Datu Salibo Municipal Police Station, identified the victim as Kameran M. Abubakar, chair of Barangay Sambulawan, Datu Salibo town.

Initial investigation showed that the victim was inside his residence in Barangay Sambolawan when unidentified men came in and shot him without provocation.

The incident occurred at about 4 p.m.

Abubakar had four gunshot wounds in various parts of his body. He was rushed to a hospital in Tacurong City, where he died hours later.

He was the second village official of Datu Salibo killed in a gun attack in the past five days.

Barangay Councilor Mandi Salandang of Barangay Penditen, Datu Salibo was also shot dead by still unidentified gunmen at 4 p.m. on December 29.

Police are still determining the motive of the two gun attacks.

Abubakar and Salandang were the fifth and sixth elected officials in Maguidanao del Sur killed since April 2024.

Police authorities are still determining if these attacks are related to this year’s midterm elections.
