BuCor taps NBI, PNP to probe Bilibid stabbing

MANILA, Philippines The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has requested the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct parallel investigation into the stabbing inside the New Bilibid Prison on Thursday.

In separate letters both dated January 2 and addressed to NBI Directed Jaime Santiago and PNP Chief Rommel Marbil, BuCor Officer-in-Charge Al Perreras said parallel investigation is necessary “to further establish facts, promote transparency, and determine accountability.”

The incident occurred on January 2 at 7:15 a.m. at Gate 1-A, Quadrant 4 of Bilibid’s Maximum Security Compound. It caused the death of inmate Ricardo Peralta.

Fellow inmates Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada sustained injuries.

Perreras also ordered Chief Superintendent Roger Boncales, acting superintendent of NBP, to submit a comprehensive incident report on the matter and fully cooperate with the investigations by the NBI and PNP.

Meanwhile, Boncales said Peralta’s body was claimed Thursday evening by his common-law wife while the two injured inmates were taken to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa.

Initially, BuCor said at least four inmates are being investigated.
