MANILA, Philippines—An 11-year old boy was killed and 10 others were injured after the bus they were riding slammed into a tree in Camarines Sur before dawn Monday, police said.
Senior Police Officer 1 Domingo Nantiza said a Masbate-bound bus driven by Blair Bailon was on its way to Masbate when it rammed an acacia tree along Rolando Andaya Highway in Sitio (settlement) Nabuntungan, Barangay (village) Banga Caves in Ragay, Camarines Sur, around 2 a.m.
The lone fatality, identified as John Carlo Cabral, died after his head hit the bus’ window at the left side.
“Baka nakatulog ng kaunti ’yong driver (The driver might have become drowsy),” Nantiza said, noting that the place of accident was a straight road.
He said Bailon escaped after the accident, but eventually surrendered to authorities around 7:15 a.m.
The 10 injured passengers were taken to the Bicol Medical Center in Naga City for treatment, Bailon said.—Jamie Marie Elona
