MANILA, Philippines – Chief Justice Renato Corona has allegedly concealed from the public 98 percent of the P180 million cash that he allegedly owned, the prosecution team claimed on Monday.

Ilocos Norte Representative Rodolfo Fariñas , in his closing argument for the prosecution, said Corona reported in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN) of a measly 1.97 percent of his total cash deposits of P180 million since he started working in the Supreme Court.

“Our nation does not deserve to have a Chief Justice who intentionally and consistently hides the great bulk of his cash assets reporting in his SALN only a measly 1.97 percent. Wala pong 2 percent of his total admitted cash,” Farinas said.

“In short Renato Corona throughout his tenure in the Supreme Court concealed from the public 98 percent of his total admitted cash assets amounting to P180 million,” he said.

Corona admitted, when he testified before the Senate, owning around P2.4 million deposits in four bank accounts and P80.7 million “co-mingled funds” in three banks.

Farinas slammed as mere “excuses” Corona’s justification of his non-declaration of dollar and peso accounts in the SALN.

And before concluding, Farinas left this message to the senators, who sit as judges in the trial: “Your honor, huwag nyo pong palusutin si Chief Justice Corona (Your honor, don’t let Chief justice Corona off the hook).”
