DOH records 188 firecracker-related injuries

MANILA, Philippines — The number of firecracker-related injuries monitored before the New Year’s Eve celebration has climbed to 188, the Department of Health (DOH) reported on Tuesday.

In a report, the agency said it monitored 188 cases from December 22 to December 31 this year, 52 percent higher than 124 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Of the 188 cases, 152 victims’ ages ranged from 19 years and below and 36 victims’ ages ranged from 20 years and above.

The affected individuals consist of 172 men and 16 women.

Moreover, 136 injuries were caused by illegal firecrackers such as boga, five-star, and piccolo.

Earlier, the DOH advised those injured to wash their firecracker-related wounds, even the small ones; cover them with sterilized gauze bandages or clean cloth; put pressure on the wound to stop bleeding; and call 911 or 1555 for assistance.

For those who suffered injuries near their eyes, the DOH told them to wash their eyes with warm water and not ice; avoid touching the affected part; and go to the nearest hospital for an anti-tetanus shot.

Moreover, those who accidentally swallowed firecrackers should eat uncooked egg whites (six to eight pieces for children and eight to 12 for adults) before going to the nearest hospital.
