1,000 prisoners released in time for New Year

Around 1,000 prisoners were released between November and December this year, bringing to 7,707 the number of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) freed since January.

The total included 152 inmates who were set free on Monday from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City. So far, a total of 18,422 PDLs have been released under the Marcos administration.

Bureau of Corrections Director Gen. Gregorio Catapang Jr. said that of the prisoners who were granted freedom this year, 625 had completed their maximum sentences, 190 were paroled, 134 were acquitted, 38 were granted probation while 11 were released through habeas corpus.

Among them were 59 who were detained at the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, two from CIW Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm, 18 from CIW Mindanao, 170 from Davao Prison and Penal Farm, 111 from Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm and 69 from Leyte Regional Prison.

Another 199 inmates were from the NBP maximum security camp, 146 from medium security,

40 from minimum security, 17 from the NBP reception and diagnostic Center, while 68 were from Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm, and 101 from San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm. INQ
