MANILA, Philippines — Rainy Christmas Day will prevail in Luzon due to the shear line and northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” the state weather bureau said on Wednesday.

In the 4 a.m. weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the shear line will dump rains in Southern Luzon while most parts of Luzon will experience rain due to the northeast monsoon.

The shear line is caused by the convergence of warm and cold winds.

Aurelio also noted that no low-pressure area or tropical cyclone is developing inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility and in parts of the Pacific Ocean.

(The rest of the country will experience slightly fair weather where partly cloudy to cloudy skies and isolated rain showers due to thunderstorms are possible.)

Meanwhile, a gale warning due to the northeast monsoon is raised over the coastal waters of the following areas:

  • Batanes
  • Cagayan, including Babuyan Islands
  • Isabela
  • The northern and western coasts of Ilocos Norte

Aurelio warned against sailing in these coastal waters where 3.1 to 4.5 meters of waves are likely to occur.
