Senators urge 13th month pay, reflect on resilience this Christmas

MANILA, Philippines — As Christmas approaches, senators urge employers to fulfill their moral and legal duty to pay the 13th month pay on time, while reflecting on the nation’s resilience in overcoming the challenges of 2024.

In a statement on Christmas Eve, Senate President Chiz Escudero said the joyous occasion reminds him of the boundless love and hope that the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ brings to humanity.

“As we reflect on the challenges we faced in 2024, including the numerous natural calamities that battered our nation, we also celebrate the resilience and unity of the Filipino people,” he said.

“As we gather with our loved ones during this festive season, let us not forget our less fortunate countrymen and extend our hands to help them. This is my prayer: food on every table, a roof over our heads, and clothes on our backs,” he added.

He then expressed hope that the spirit of Christmas inspires Filipinos to be “more compassionate, generous, and kind-hearted.”

“Let us carry this spirit of hope and solidarity into the new year as we look forward to a brighter and more prosperous 2025,” he said.

13th month pay

Meanwhile, two senators — Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada and Sen. Joel Villanueva — took the opportunity to remind employers that workers are entitled to receive their 13th month pay.

In a statement, Estrada said that it is not only a legal obligation but also a moral duty for employers to ensure the timely payment of the 13th month pay to their employees by the deadline set by law — Dec. 24.

“As a moral obligation, our workforce deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication to their jobs,” said Estrada.

“Not adhering to this requirement could lead to significant legal repercussions, such as administrative penalties or criminal charges. Let’s commit to fairness and justice by meeting our obligations to our employees and supporting their well-being this holiday season,” he emphasized.

Villanueva, chair of the Senate panel on labor, employment, and human resources development, made a remark similar to Estrada’s.

“We urge our employers that in the spirit of Christmas, let us show our appreciation for our Filipino workers by paying their 13th month pay on time.  Let’s make every Filipino household happy this Christmas,” said Villanueva.
