MANILA, Philippines — “No one, regardless of position or rank, should be allowed to stand above the law.”

These were the words used by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) when it acknowledged on Tuesday the recommendation of the House of Representatives to file charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte, Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go and other former government officials.

The House endorsement pertains to the alleged extrajudicial killings during the Duterte administration.

“Throughout the 13 hearings conducted by the quad committee, the CHR has consistently monitored the testimonies, affidavits and sworn statements of all resource persons,” said CHR in a statement on Tuesday.

“This is in fulfillment of our CHR’s mandate to ensure that human rights violations are actively addressed by the state and that perpetrators are held accountable,” it noted.

“It is high time everyone recognizes that true justice requires sustainable and humane solutions and establish measures to prevent future injustices,” the commission added.
