LUCENA CITY, Philippines — Authorities are investigating the cause of a ground rupture that caused a landslide that prompted the evacuation of 30 families in Lopez town in Quezon province on Saturday night, Dec. 15.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. and caused damage to 15 houses and two school classrooms in Barangay Matinik., according to the Quezon provincial government.

The affected villagers, composed of 90 individuals, were evacuated to the barangay hall for their safety.

In a video clip on her Facebook page, Judy Cabildo, s former barangay councilor, said they felt the ground suddenly shake and then erupt, but no earthquake could have caused it. The ground was also dry as it had not been raining in the area.

The incident also caused a landslide and destroyed sections of the national highway, making it impassable for heavy vehicles.

Even the railway track that passes along the village is temporarily inaccessible.

Quezon Gov. Angelina Tan ordered the immediate distribution of assistance to the victims, immediate road repairs and other damage.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the ground rupture.
