Senate President Francis “Chiz” G. Escudero on Monday, November 4, 2024, files a bill seeking to postpone the first regular elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Senate Bill No. 2862 seeks to reset the BARMM elections, which is scheduled to be held and synchronized with the 2025 midterm elections, on May 11, 2026. Escudero, during a media interview, said the postponement of elections would allow Congress to amend provisions in the Bangsamoro Organic Law. In SBN 2862, Escudero said recent developments speak of institutional and statutory issues which might result in disenfranchisement. One is the status of the Special Geographic Area in the BARMM consisting of eight municipalities but without a province. “This is a recommendation coming from the administration that is being pushed in the Senate, so the Senate will discuss it,” Escudero told reporters.
