MANILA, Philippines — As the nation marked the 161st birth anniversary of national hero Andres Bonifacio, Filipinos were urged to “reject fear, division, and discord” amid the ongoing political feud.
Speaker Martin Romualdez said in a message for Bonifacio Day, Nov. 30, that Filipinos should remember the hero’s courage and sacrifices. He also stressed “the vital role of integrity, unity, and accountability in nation-building.”
“In these challenging times, when the principles of democracy and good governance are put to the test, let us draw inspiration from Bonifacio’s bravery and steadfast commitment to the truth,” said the top leader of the House of Representatives.

“His life reminds us that genuine leadership demands not just strength, but also respect for others and a deep sense of responsibility to uphold the greater good,” he added.
Bonifacio was leader of the Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, a revolutionary society that aimed to liberate the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule.
According to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, respecting Bonifacio’s memory requires “safeguarding the democracy and freedom he fought so valiantly to achieve.”
