Manila Seniors Clamor for Moreno’s Return

Former Manila Mayor Isko Moreno at a recent gathering with senior citizens of the city.

Manila’s elderly community is feeling the pinch, both in their hearts and their wallets. From delayed to sometimes nonexistent allowances to a downgrade in birthday treats, the city’s seniors are longing for the days of Isko Moreno’s leadership.

At a recent gathering at SM City Manila, the former mayor addressed their frustrations, offering reassurance and a sprinkle of his signature humor.

Edna Cervantes, a 72-year-old resident of San Andres, shared her sentiments.

“During Isko’s time, we felt that we were special and cared for. Now it seems [Mayor Honey] Lacuna is just going through the motions,” she lamented in Filipino.

The contrast between administrations is stark. During Moreno’s tenure, seniors received large cans of Ensure nutritional drinks as part of their benefits. Now, under Lacuna, they said they have been handed wafer sticks instead. The once cherished birthday cakes have also shrunk to cupcakes, leaving many feeling forgotten.

Moreno lightened the mood with a cheeky quip.

“Kaya ko kayo binibigyan ng birthday cake at pinapasaya sa kaarawan niyo, kasi baka konti na lang ang birthdays niyo,” he said in jest.

(The reason I give you birthday cakes and make you feel special on your natal day is because you only have a few more birthdays left.)

The seniors roared with laughter.

As the crowd cheered, Moreno promised to prioritize them if given another chance to serve as mayor.

Recent commissioned Octa surveys show Moreno leading by a whopping 78% over Lacuna, proof that the nostalgia for his administration might just translate into votes.

Whether it’s the allowances, the cakes, or the genuine care, Manila’s seniors are making their voices heard—and they’re loudly calling for Moreno’s return.
