NDRRMC: Death reports due to cyclones Nika, Ofel, Pepito rise to 12

MANILA, Philippines — The reported death count from the onslaught of three recent tropical cyclones rose to 12, based on the latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Of the number, however, the NDRRMC could validate only five cases so far, according to the agency’s situational report on the impacts of cyclones Nika (international name: Toraji), Ofel (international name: Usagi), and Pepito (international name: Man-yi) issued at 8 a.m., Thursday, November 21.

The NDRRMC said the reported deaths came from its offices in Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), Region 3 (Central Luzon), and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

The NDRRMC also said it received reports about 16 people injured and four people missing as the cyclones caused massive devastation to areas along its path.

The latest NDRRMC tally likewise showed that Nika, Ofel, and Pepito affected 3.5 million, or more than 930,000 families. Some 300,953 of them were staying in 2,331 evacuation centers nationwide while 128,899 sought shelter elsewhere.

The affected population are in Region 1 (Ilocos), Region 2, Region 3, Region 4A (Calabarzon), Region 4B (Mimaropa), Region 5 (Bicol), and CAR, according to the NDRRMC.

Cities placed under a state of calamity stood at 29 as of November 21, the NDRRMC added, also noting that the needs of people in cyclone-lashed areas were already given P226,782,311 worth of assistance.

Nika left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on November 12, while Ofel and Pepito exited the PAR on November 17 and November 18, respectively.
