Storm surge alert up in Luzon, Visayas as Pepito's landfall nears

MANILA, Philippines — A warning on the likely event of a storm surge was raised over parts of Luzon and Visayas ahead of the landfall of Super Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi) on Saturday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said storm surges between 1.0 meter and more than 3.0 meters are possible along the coasts of these Luzon and Visayas areaa due to strong winds brought on by Pepito.

Pagasa said in its 10 a.m. tropical cyclone bulletin that Pepito was packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 230 kph. The super typhoon was last located 215 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar, and moving west-northwest at 25 kph.

The state weather agency said Pepito further intensified from typhoon to super typhoon at 8 a.m. Saturday, November 16. The state meteorologist explained that a cyclone is categorized as a super typhoon once its maximum wind speeds reach or exceed 185 kph.

Pagasa also projected Pepito’s landfall in the vicinity of Catanduanes either Saturday evening or Sunday early morning, November 17.
