Storm surge warning up over parts of Luzon, Visayas as typhoon looms

MANILA, Philippines — Storm surge warnings were issued on Friday in parts of Southern Luzon, Central Luzon, Bicol region and Eastern Visayas due to Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi).

In its 2:00 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said there is a moderate to high risk of flooding due to rising seawater and high waves in low-lying coastal communities in the said regions.

Pepito intensified into a typhoon on Friday morning, moving westward at 30 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

It is expected to hit Catanduanes either Saturday evening (Nov. 16) or Sunday early morning (Nov. 17), traverse the Luzon landmass, and cross over to the West Philippine Sea by Monday (Nov. 18).
