MANILA, Philippines — The National Privacy Commission (NPC) will launch an investigation into the widespread unauthorized transfers involving several users of the country’s leading mobile wallet GCash.
In a statement, the NPC said that GCash informed it about the incident on Nov. 11.

However, the digital payment giant maintained that it recorded “no data leakage or personal data breach” in the incident that resulted in some GCash users reporting the loss of money from their accounts.
“Although GCash has stated that there was no compromise of customer credentials or data in the incident, the NPC will still conduct an independent investigation in line with its mandate to administer and implement the Data Privacy Act of 2012,” it said.
“This investigation will verify the absence of a personal data breach, ensuring transparency and accountability in the protection of GCash users’ personal information,” the NPC added. —Lisbet K. Esmael
