DA: Agriculture losses due to typhoons hit P6.83B

The country’s agriculture sector incurred P6.83 billion in losses due to the combined effects of storms Kristine and Leon, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Thursday.

Based on the DA’s latest bulletin, the weather disturbances disrupted the livelihood of 171,080 farmers and fishers in Cordillera, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western, Central, and Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Soccsksargen and Caraga regions.

Rice crops suffered the most damage at P5.05 billion, while damage to high-value crops was at P880.15 million.

Also affected were fisheries (P665.01 million), corn (P107.95 million), cassava (P40.34 million), livestock, and poultry (P14.10 million). —JORDEENE B. LAGARE
