13 Cebuanos make Gullas Cup finals
A total of 13 Cebuano netters advanced to the finals of their respective categories in the 17th Gullas Cup which will end today at the Cebu International Tennis Centre Inc. (CITCI) in Laray, Consolacion, Cebu.
Leading the local charge are Fritz Satera and Sally Mae Siso in the premier 18-and-under category.
Satera will dispute the boys 18U title against Angelo Esguerra of Butuan after nipping Cagayan de Oro’s Dave Mosqueda, 5-7, 6-3, 10-1.
Esguerra, on the other hand, drubbed Francis Edelbert Alcantara also of Cagayan de Oro, 6-0, 6-2.
In the distaff side, Siso dismissed close friend Hannah Grace Espinosa, 6-2, 6-1, to forge a finals duel with another close friend Crissianne Issa Kintanar, who beat Mary Claire Lazaga, 6-4, 6-2.
In the boys 16U, Cebu’s Jarryd Laurel and Cagayan de Oro’s Francis Mosqueda will dispute the crown. Laurel crushed Jose Francis Suazo, 6-4, 6-1 while Mosqueda dismissed Alcantara, 7-5, 6-2.
Article continues after this advertisementThe girls finals will pit Kintanar against Ozamiz’ Imaville Gervacio. Kintanar earned her second finals stint after bashing Shyne Villarel, 6-0, 6-2 while Gervacio sailed past Maimai Ceniza Bornia, 6-2, 6-0.
Article continues after this advertisementBornia, however, gets a chance to avenge her loss to Gervacio as they will again meet for the girls 14 title.
Gervacio got her finals ticket after defeating Jana Pages, 6-2, 7-5, while Bornia scored a, 6-1, 6-1 annihilation of Gervacio’s sister Carmiville.
The boys 14 final will be an all-Cebuano affair with Christopher Encarnacion facing John Clyde Laquio.
Encarnacion beat Harvey Klein Gilbuena, 6-4, 6-3 while Laquio toppled Francis Gener Lambayan, 6-1, 6-3.
Both the title in the boys and girls 12 and under divisions will be disputed by Cebuanos.
Lambayan will battle Francis Hidalgo for the boys title. Lambayan crushed March Suson, 6-2, 6-4, while Hidalgo proved too much for Jace Unto, 6-1, 6-3.
Zethley Mae Alferez and Kara Salimbangon will duke it out for the girls 12 title. Alferez beat Carmiville Gervacuio, 6-3, 6-2 in the semis while Salimbangon trounced Ma. Delrose Duran, 6-0, 6-4.
Salimbangon’s brother Cesar will gun for the unisex 10 crown against Nonito John Pepito.
