MANILA, Philippines — The Manila South Cemetery will have its own crematorium, Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna announced on Monday.
Lacuna said that the P24.8-million contract was bagged by Chainworks Corporation last August 30.
“The crematorium is one of our high-impact, pro-poor infrastructure projects implemented by the Manila Health Department. The cemetery and related services are under the purview of the MHD,” Lacuna said.
“The need for a public crematorium in Manila is one of the lessons learned from the COVID pandemic because we saw that the poor of Manila needed an affordable crematorium,” she added.
Manila South Cemetery also houses a 2,400 square-meter cemetery for Muslims.
Lacuna likewise said that the city government in 2024 allocated P33.48 million for cemetery services, P25.7 million for personnel, and P7.76 million for maintenance and other operating services.
Lacuna inspected Manila South Cemetery on Monday afternoon as part of preparations for Undas.
On Sunday, the city government announced Manila North and South Cemeteries will be open from October 30 to November 3 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.
