ILIGAN CITY — The community of Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Maramag town, Bukidnon is in mourning following the death of two students in accidents on Wednesday.
Students, faculty and administrators of the school held candle lighting rites on Thursday to honor and celebrate the life of Joshua Frontreras and Maxwell Aynrand Cubillas.
“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the two CMUans we lost. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences,” said a statement from the CMU administration.
“We will keep them in our thoughts and prayers as we join their families and loved ones during this very difficult time,” it added.
“You are not alone. We are a community that care deeply for one another, and with that, let us keep Maxwell and Joshua’s families in our thoughts (and) prayers as they navigate this unimaginable loss,” said Jose Valmorida, CMU vice president for academic affairs.
He made the statement before a crowd that gathered on Thursday in front of the school’s administration building.
Frontreras, 21, of nearby Valencia City, was rushing to a class aboard his motorcycle when he figured in a vehicular accident.
Later in the day, Cubillas was struck by a tree toppled by the strong winds of oncoming Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.
“Joshua was more than just a bright and dedicated student. He was a beacon of leadership and compassion, someone who inspired and influenced everyone fortunate enough to know him,” said a tribute statement posted on social media by CMU’s Organization of Animal Science Major Students.
“His unwavering dedication to service and leadership touched the hearts of many, leaving an indelible mark in our community,” it noted.
Frontreras was in his third year in CMU’s animal science program under the college of agriculture.
