Over 2,000 passengers stranded in Sorsogon ports due to Kristine

SANTA MAGDALENA, Sorsogon — More than 2,000 passengers were stranded in Sorsogon ports after sea travel was suspended due to Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine” (international name: Trami), the Coast Guard District Bicol reported on Thursday, Oct. 24.

A total of 2,701 passengers are currently taking temporary refuge in the province’s ports, awaiting the resumption of travel operations.

The majority or 2,273 of the stranded passengers are at Matnog port, while Pilar port logged 425 passengers, and Bulan port had three, according to the report.

In addition, 608 rolling vessels were stuck at Matnog port, with another 28 at Pilar port, as bad weather conditions persisted.

In a 2 p.m. advisory, the Sorsogon Coast Guard reiterated that sea travel remains suspended throughout the entire province.

On Wednesday, the Port Management Office in Bicol provided hot meals to around 200 stranded passengers at Matnog port, while the Sorsogon provincial government assisted in addressing the needs of those affected.

Sorsogon remains under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1, according to the state weather bureau. INQ
