TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines — With Tropical Storm Kristine approaching northern Luzon, local officials in 12 towns and one city in Cagayan province have suspended classes on Tuesday (Oct. 22) as a precaution.
Rogelio Sending Jr., Cagayan’s provincial information chief, confirmed that six areas—Calayan, Amulung, Alcala, Iguig, and Enrile—canceled classes at all levels in both public and private schools.
Eight other areas, including Tuguegarao City and the towns of Lal-lo, Aparri, Solana, Lasam, Peñablanca, Baggao, and Camalaniugan, suspended classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12, as well as the Alternative Learning System.
In addition to the class suspensions, Cagayan and Isabela officials have imposed a liquor ban and restricted sailing and fishing activities along coastal areas.
Irrigation authorities at Magat Dam in Isabela have also begun releasing water from the reservoir at 144 cubic meters per second, starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
The National Irrigation Administration’s Magat River Integrated Irrigation System division manager, Engineer Carlo Ablan, said the release is in anticipation of heavy rains brought by Kristine.
As of Tuesday morning, the water level at Magat Dam was recorded at 183.02 meters, still below the normal level of 190 meters and the critical level of 193 meters.
