Carlos, Gadi, Alcala bag PBaRS crowns

Bianca Carlos came away a big winner after she upset top-seeded Gelita Castillo, 21-17, 21-14, in the ladies Open singles final which capped off her fine performance yesterday that also saw her grab the Under-19 title at the close of the P1 million MVP Sports Foundation-Philippine Badminton Ranking System (PBaRS) circuit at the Metro Sports Center in Lahug.

Carlos took the first set with a fine floor game and then crushed her Golden Shuttle Foundation teammate in the second set to claim the title and the P70,000 that came with it.

Earlier, Carlos battered Patrisha Malibiran, 21-3, 21-16, to claim 19-under crown. She went home P20,000 richer for that feat.

Castilo though, made amends as she combined with Dia Magno to beat Jen Cayetano and Kim Mayono, 13-21, 21-19, 21-17, and bag the Open women’s doubles crown while the duo of Joaquin Deato and Inlayo defeated Fides Bagasbas and Alyssa Geverjuan, 23-25, 21-8, 21-16, to clinch the U-15 mixed doubles plum.

In other results, the favorites did not disappoint as Tobi Gadi and Mark Alcala came away with the championships in their respective divisions, as expected.

Gadi defeated Ralph Ian Mendez, 21-16, 21-12, for his fifth men’s Open singles crown also worth P70,000. Alcala on the other hand, breezed past Patrick Gecosala, 21-12, 21-11, to continue his domination of the boys’ U-15 division and earnP10,000.

Joint No. 4 Eleanor Inlayo surprised third seed Jessie Francisco in a thrilling duel, 21-13, 21-23, 22-20, to steal the girls’ U-15 diadem worth P10,000. No. 7 Joper Escueta and Peter Gabriel Magnaye upset the top-seeded pair of Ronnel Estanislao and Paul Vivas, 21-11, 21-19, to capture the Open men’s doubles title and the top P70,000 purse.

Carlos Cayanan and Gerald Sibayan demolished Vincent Manuel and Alvin Morada, 21-6, 21-11, to capture the boys’ U-19 doubles title while JC Clarito and Kristelle Salatan held off Theodore Co and Janel Dihiansan, 21-15, 22-20, to snatch the U-19 mixed doubles crown.
