Suspect in killing of retired cop hurt in armed encounter in Calamba City

LUCENA CITY – A suspect in the killing of a retired policeman in Tanauan City, Batangas was wounded in an alleged shootout with cops in Calamba City, Laguna on Tuesday, October 1.

The Region 4A police in a report Wednesday, October 2, said alias “Rudy” suffered gunshot wounds after he engaged a team of policemen in an exchange of gun fires along the national highway in Barangay (village) Paciano Rizal around 11 p.m.

The report said a team of policemen spotted the suspect and introduced themselves. But instead of surrendering, the suspects reportedly shot the cops but missed his target.

The lawmen returned fire and hit Rudy. He was taken to the nearest hospital where he is still confined for treatment.

On the night of Sept. 30, Arnel Tobes, 48, a retired policeman, was found dead in a grassy portion of Barangay Janopol Oriental in Tanauan City.

Investigators found out that the victim died from asphyxia when he was suffocated using a plastic bag. Evidences pointed to Rudy as the primary suspect.

The police are investigating the possible motive behind the killing of the victim.
