Heavy rains disrupt classes in Sorsogon

SANTA MAGDALENA, Sorsogon — Classes at all levels in all public and private schools in Sorsogon were suspended on Friday, Sept. 13, as the entire province experienced heavy rains due to the Southwest monsoon.

The Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (SPDRRMO) said in an advisory that suspending classes was made to “ensure the safety of the students and the general public.”

Classes will remain suspended until further notice.

The SPDRRMO called on the local governments to monitor their constituents amid the bad weather and encouraged local disaster response measures as needed.

The public is encouraged to stay updated with information regarding the weather as the rains continue.

In a separate advisory, Sorsogon City Mayor Ester Hamor also ordered the cancellation of classes in all schools in the province’s capital.

As early as 5:30 a.m., the municipal disaster risk reduction and management council of Bulusan town, also in Sorsogon, made a similar pronouncement in a Facebook post.

The state weather bureau raised a red rainfall warning in the province around 2 a.m. on Friday, indicating the risk of hazardous flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas. INQ
