MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile ordered Tuesday a lockdown of the Senate after Chief Justice Renato Corona walked out of the chamber which is acting as an impeachment court.
Corona immediately left after finishing his statement before the impeachment tribunal without waiting to be properly discharged from the witness stand.
The chief magistrate however has not left the building.
“Nobody can get out,” Enrile told the Senate security who were also ordered that all Senate doors be locked.
Enrile also ordered defense team to make him return.
“If you are going to disrespect this court, we will make a decision on this case right now,” he said.
Before this, Corona’s lead counsel, former Supreme Court Justice Serafin Cuevas apologized for Corona’s action.
“I apologize to the seeming disrespect to this honorable court. There’s no intention whatsoever…” said Cuevas.
“In fact, he’s taking his medicines and attending to his personal necessity,” he said.
Cuevas’ remarks received a loud booed from the crowd in the gallery.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we have been patient. I warned you, if you’re going to continue to be disorderly, I will ask the Sergeant at Arms to escort all of you out of this session hall,” said Enrile.
