LEGAZPI CITY — Classes in two towns in Albay and Camarines Sur provinces were suspended on Wednesday, Aug. 28, due to continuous rains caused by thunderstorms.

In Libon town in Albay, Mayor Wilfredo Maronilla said in an advisory that starting at noon, classes in public and private schools were suspended as moderate to heavy rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas and landslides.

He also advised village officials to monitor the situation in their respective areas.

In Camarines Sur, Pili Mayor Tomas Bongalonta Jr. canceled classes on Wednesday due to moderate to heavy rains in the capital town.

The advisory said classes from preschool to junior high school were canceled to protect students from the “hazardous effect of this worsening weather condition.”

It also stated that classes in senior high school and college levels may be suspended at the discretion of their school heads.

Bongalota said the town center area was experiencing flash floods and anticipated landslides in some barangays as the rains continued.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon reported moderate to heavy rains with lightning and strong winds in San Pascual town in Masbate; Libon, and Polangui town in Albay and other areas in Romblon, and Marinduque, in a 9 a.m. thunderstorm advisory.

In a separate advisory at 10 a.m., Pagasa warned of possible flooding and landslides in Pandan, Bagamanoc, and Panganiban towns in Catanduanes province due to heavy rains.

Pagasa’s rainfall advisory attributed the moderate to heavy rains in Camarines Sur to the southwest monsoon.
