To show its support to Filipino athletes competing in the upcoming London Olympics, Summit Natural Drinking Water will hold its first running event this year, the “Run For Pinoy Glory” on July 7, 2012 at the Fort San Pedro grounds.
The run is aimed to raised funds for the country’s bid to win its first ever Olympic gold in London.
“This is purely for our athletes who will be representing the Philippines in London. But Summit has been supporting our athletes for the past years in partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee,” said Angelie Dan Ong, Summit’s brand manager.
To make the running event possible, Ong tapped Laurence Plata, the general manager of Shadow Fax events who, together with race director Joel Juarez, will handle the event’s technical concerns.
Proceeds from this run will provide qualifying athletes with supplementary funds to help them train for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
According to Ong, Summit is already supporting the Filipino athletes for the past three years including Filipino mountaineers who climbed Mount Everest and boxers among others.
Last Jan. 7, the first leg of the Run For Pinoy Glory was successfully held in Manila’s Bonifacio Global City which drew more than a thousand runners.
“Let’s harness the bayanihan spirit and help our athletes to attain Olympic glory. We encourage everyone to help by joining the run and spreading the word,” added Ong.
The race will have five categories: 3-kilometer, 5k, 12k, 16k and 21k half marathon and will include a special 3k category for PWD’s in wheel chair.
Some of the country’s Paralympians who will compete in London this August are expected to grace the event.
Making this running event unique is that organizers will award specially designed shirts resembling the Philippine Flag for the 21-kilometer finishers and 3-inch Olympic inspired design medals. A 2.5-inch version of the medal will be given to the 16k finishers.
Despite having two other races on July 7, organizers are optimistic that they can attract 2,000 participants. They are also planning to provide cash rewards to all division winners. Participants will receive loot bags and other exciting prizes.
Registration is ongoing at RUNNR Ayala Center Cebu, ROX and at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) office in the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC). Registration fee is P300 for the 3k and 5k runners, P450 for 12k, P550 for 16k and P650 for 21k.
A group of five runners will have an additional member free of charge.
