Tondo fire extinguished after 41 hours – BFP

MANILA, Philippines — After over 41 hours, the fire ravaging a four-story warehouse in Tondo, Manila, was declared “fire out” by authorities on Saturday afternoon.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the blaze at the building located along Guidote Street in Barangay 132, Balut, Tondo, started Thursday night with the first alarm recorded at 8:01 p.m.

The fire reached the second alarm 13 minutes later.

On Saturday, August 10, the BFP said in a Viber message that the inferno was under control as of 9:16 a.m. – approximately one day and 13 hours after the fire began on August 8.

It was then declared extinguished at 1:21 p.m.

Fire authorities said that based on their initial estimates, the Tondo fire damaged P19.9 million worth of assets. They also said that while no fatality has been reported, 16 fire volunteers were injured while trying to douse the blaze.

Some of the firefighters suffered second-degree superficial burns on different parts of the body, mostly on the palm and face.

An initial investigation indicated that the fire broke out on the second floor of the warehouse where the repair/storage area was located.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
