CA approves appointment of Sonny Angara as DepEd secretary
MANILA, Philippines — The powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) approved on Wednesday the appointment of Sonny Angara as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
This, after the CA panel recommended the plenary approval of the former senator’s post.
“We were all shaped and groomed by the DepEd of our times. Which is why I took this duty very seriously because the person who will take on the leadership of the DepEd will make decisions that will determine our country’s future,” said Sen. Raffy Tulfo during the CA’s plenary session.
Tulfo heads the CA’s panel on education, which earlier approved and recommended Angara’s designation.
“Fortunately, the person appointed by our dear President, made this job easy for us because he appointed someone whose background and body of work equipped him with knowledge, experience, and passion to be the secretary of the department,” said Tulfo.

The support came after Vice President Sara Duterte left Marcos’ cabinet and tendered her resignation for the position of Education secretary on June 19.
Angara earned his law degree at the University of the Philippines, Master of Laws degree at Harvard University and economic degree at the London School of Economics.
His father – late Senate President Edgardo Angara – is also a well-known figure in the education sector being the former president of the University of the Philippines.
