6.2-magnitude offshore aftershock sways Surigao del Sur
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.2 aftershock hit Surigao del Sur waters on Saturday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
This offshore tectonic tremor occurred at 12:20 p.m., 84 kilometers east of Lingig town. It had a depth of focus of two kilometers.
Phivolcs’ first bulletin on this aftershock indicated that it had 6.1 magnitude and was detected 90 kilometers east of Lingig town with a depth of focus of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs’ latest bulletin likewise showed that the aftershock’s reported strength was:
- Intensity V in Lingig and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
- Intensity IV in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; and Monkayo, Davao de Oro
- Intensity III in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur
- Intensity II in Magsaysay, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
- Intensity I in Cagwait, Surigao del Sur; and Cagayan de Oro City
It further noted that its scale recorded the aftershock at Instrumental Intensity II in Davao City.

Initially, the first earthquake was reported to have occurred at 6:23 a.m., some 67 km east of Lingig, Surigao del Sur, with a magnitude of 6.5.
Phivolcs earlier warned that while the Saturday morning temblor, which was felt at Intensity V in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, may not be expected to cause damage, aftershocks may follow.
This aftershock is neither anticipated to result in damage nor another aftershock, Phivolcs said.
