Nearly 500,000 students affected by class delays after Typhoon Carina

MANILA, Philippines — Almost half a million students have been affected by the postponement of the opening of classes in some regions because of the onslaught of the southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Carina.

Based on data from the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, a total of 454,082 learners from the National Capital Region and Regions 1, 3, and 4A have been affected by the delay in the opening of classes for the School Year (SY) 2024-2025.

Additionally, as of 8 a.m., DepEd said that there were only 615 schools from the mentioned regions that have yet to open their classes.

This number is less than one percent of the total number of public schools in the country.

Furthermore, as of 6 p.m. on July 31, DepEd said that 22,768,874 students have enrolled for SY 2024-2025.

DepEd said that number is still expected to go up until the end of the enrollment period on September 16.
