MANILA, Philippines — It was a bittersweet moment at the Senate’s plenary hall when Sonny Angara faced his former colleagues.

Angara, concurrent head of the Department of Education, was given the opportunity to speak before his former co-senators on Tuesday.

“I am so touched to be honored while I still have a pulse, while I’m still breathing—it is an honor that not many get to enjoy. I thank you, it is not during necrological that these kind words are said for me,” said Angara.

Senators during the chamber’s proceedings took turns in saying their goodbyes to their former colleague. They showered Angara with words of admiration as well as messages of good luck for his new post.

“It’s a really bittersweet moment but I don’t want to speak too long. I prefer to remember the sweet over the bitter because there has been much more sweet than bitter,” Angara said.

The former senator proceeded to enumerate one by one his ex-colleagues, thanking them for shaping his years as a lawmaker.

In the end, the somber mood at the hall even became more somber when Angara delivered the last paragraph of his speech.

“Whenever I go, wherever I am, wherever we are, I carry you with me. We have a bond that will forever be ours and can never be taken away,” said Angara.

Angrara officially replaced Vice President Sara Duterte in heading DepEd last July 19.

He earned his law degree at the University of the Philippines, Master of Laws degree at Harvard University and economic degree at the London School of Economics.

His father–late Senate President Edgardo Angara–is also a well-known figure in the education sector being the former president of the University of the Philippines.
