MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) postponed the July 31 “Metro Manila Shake Drill” to allow ongoing clean-up and repair activities in calamity-hit areas to continue.
On Facebook on Tuesday, July 30, the MMDA said: “Hindi po matutuloy ang Metro Manila Shake Drill na nakatakda bukas, Hulyo 31, dahil sa patuloy na isinasagawang paglilinis at pagsasaayos ng mga pinsalang tinamo sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Metro Manila dulot ng habagat at bagyong Carina noong nakaraang linggo.”
(The Metro Manila Shake Drill that was scheduled for tomorrow, July 31, will not go ahead due to the ongoing cleaning and repair of the damages sustained in various parts of Metro Manila caused by last week’s strong winds and typhoon Carina.)

The Metro Manila Shake Drill is being conducted to prepare the public for the “Big One,” which is feared to devastate various areas in Luzon.
Last June, various government agencies participated in the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill for the second quarter of the year.

The event highlighted the activation of the Harmonized National Contingency Plan, which establishes key Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils across Luzon.
These councils will assist the National Capital Region from the north, east, west, and south sectors in case the powerful earthquake strikes.
