Typhoon, ‘habagat’ death toll jumps to 39; agri damage pegged at P545-M

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the combined effects of the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” and recent typhoons has risen to 39, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Tuesday.
Damage to agriculture was pegged at P545,216,362 and affected 23,580 farmers and fisherfolk.
Of the 39 reported deaths, NDRRMC said it only confirmed 14 and was still validating the 25 other cases.
In its Tuesday morning situational report, the agency revealed that the number of injured and missing people also rose to seven and six, respectively.
The NDRRMC likewise reported that the number of affected individuals rose from 4,553,752 to 4,839,002 persons or 1,317,111 families.
Most of those affected are from Central Luzon (3,042,813), the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (552,971), and the Ilocos region 341,682).
The number of displaced persons, however, decreased to 732,785 from the 794,744 recorded on Monday.
Some 108,083 are still in evacuation centers nationwide, while 624,702 took shelter elsewhere.
Typhoon Carina exited the country’s area of responsibility last July 25, but its damage prompted the national government to place Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon under a state of calamity.
The NDRRMC said that the government distributed P321,565,026 in assistance to 107,014 families nationwide.
