Boy drowns in Laguna; Elderly man dies from flash flood in Rizal

LUCENA CITY — A 13-year-old boy drowned in a swamp in San Pedro City, Laguna while an old man perished in a flash flood in Rodriguez, Rizal, the police said.

In a report released Saturday, July 27, the Region 4A police said that “DJ”, 13; “Justin”, 10; and “Mel, 12, were playing near a swamp in Barangay (village) San Antonio in San Pedro City at around 2 p.m. on Friday, July 26.

Justin went into the water and subsequently drowned. DJ jumped into the water to rescue his playmate but also drowned, police said quoting information from Mel.

Rescuers recovered DJ’s body around 6 p.m. He died while being taken to the hospital..

The report said authorities are still conducting a search operation to find Justin who was still missing.

Meanwhile, in a belated report, Rodriguez police said that one alias “Diosdado”, 66, drowned in a flash flood in Barangay Burgos on Thursday, July 25, when he refused to leave his house to evacuate during torrential rains.

The house was consequently swept away by the raging flash flood. The victim’s body was recovered at 10:30 a.m. the same day.

Heavy rains due to Typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) and the strong southwest monsoon resulted in massive floods and landslides in parts of the country in recent days, forcing cities and towns to eventually declare a state of calamity.
