FIRE GUTS MANDAUE HOUSE

A TWO-STORY house was gutted by a fire in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City, on  Friday night.

The fire started in a bakery at the first floor of the house. Beside the bakery were a sari-sari store and a motor parts store.

Damaged was pegged at P100,000, said SFO1 Roy Garcia fire investigator of the Mandaue City Fire Department.

The alarm was received at 10:20 p.m. The fire was contained at 10:47 p.m.

Garcia said someone boiled  water on a  gas stove at Sprinkle Delight Bakery and left the stove unattended.

Dulce Perez, the 73-year-old owner of the house, said she was thankful that no one was hurt as they they were asleep when the bakery caught fire.

“Never mind those material things that were damaged. We can find replacements for that. The important thing is that  no lives were lost,” said Perez in Cebuano./CORRESPONDENTS NORMAN V. MENDOZA AND FE MARIE D. DUMABOC

NOT ENOUGH COMPENSATION?

THE wife of a construction worker who died after falling from the fifth floor of the building he was working  on complained to the police that she did not receive enough compensation.

Charlene Comahig, 28, went to the homicide section of the Cebu City Police Office to file a complaint against Island Estate Management Inc.

She earlier signed an affidavit of desistance  when the company amicably settled the case by giving her  P10,000 following the accidental death of her husband Melchor last May 7.

The laborer fell from the fifth floor of a six-story building  being constructed on Llorente Street in barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City.

The man died three days after he was confined at the Cebu City Medical Center.

The wife said she wants the company to  give her financial assistance for the schooling of her three minor children.

A staffer of Island Estate Company who introduced herself as Ruth said  the accident  happened while Melchor was off duty and that Melchor  not a regular employee. He  was recruited by a foreman to work as a tile installer.

She said the company paid at least P80,000 for Melchor’s hospitalization but can’t shoulder costs of the children’s education. /CORRESPONDENT CHITO O. ARAGON

MAN HURT IN ROAD MISHAP

A PASSENGER  was wounded after a bakery delivery truck he was riding rammed a center island in barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City.

Regan Buenaflor, 23, suffered body bruises.

It was raining hard when the accident happened 2:30 a.m. yesterday.

The driver said the road was slippery.
