DepEd chief signs IRR for teachers’ career progression
MANILA, Philippines — Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara signed Friday the implementing rules and regulations for public school teachers’ expanded career progression system.
The IRR was for Executive Order (EO) 174, titled Establishing the Expanded Career Progression System for Public School Teachers, which targets to address the long-standing problem of slow promotion processes among public school teachers.
Under the IRR, the Classroom Teaching Career Line will now include additional teaching positions: Teacher IV (Salary Grade (SG) 14), Teacher V (SG 15), Teacher VI (SG 16), Teacher VII (SG 17), and Master Teacher V (SG 22).
Meanwhile, the career path for public school teachers pursuing administrative roles will feature the following positions: School Principal I, School Principal II, School Principal III, and School Principal IV.

Article continues after this advertisementPublic school teachers who qualify for Master Teacher I, on the other hand, will have the option to remain in classroom teaching or move into school administration.

In his speech, Angara said EO 174 will give teachers more options on where they want to go with their career.
“So here under the new EO or implementing rules, mayroon na po siyang (they now have a) choice. He or she can go freely from the teaching track to the administrative track,” he said.

“So hindi po nasasakripisyo ‘yung kalidad ng ating education sapagkat nandoon pa rin ‘yung choice ng teacher, the teacher can still teach, and the students will benefit from that teacher’s experience,” he added.
(So the quality of our education is not being sacrificed because the teacher’s choice is still there, the teacher can still teach, and the students will benefit from that teacher’s experience.)
The DepEd is set to collaborate with the DBM, Civil Service Commission, and Professional Regulation Commission in the reclassification process and standardization of qualifications for the new teaching positions.
