‘Gil Tulog’ road signs removed as Makati execs behind it ‘reprimanded’

MANILA, Philippines — The viral “Gil Tulog” road signs that altered the original “Gil Puyat” markings were immediately taken down, Makati Mayor Abby Binay said Friday.

Binay explained that the permit request to change the road sign for an advertising campaign did not reach her office, adding that she would have denied it if it did.

According to Binay, the city officials who issued the permit “should have exercised prudence.”

“Dapat inisip ang kaguluhan na maaaring idulot sa mga motorista at komyuter. At dapat ay binigyang halaga ang respeto sa pamilya at sa alaala ni dating Senate President Gil Puyat. I have already reprimanded these officials for this glaring oversight,” she said in a statement.

“Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa ating mga kababayan at sa pamilya ni dating Senate President Puyat (I apologize to our countrymen and the family of former Senate President Puyat). These signs have been taken down on my instruction,” she also said.

The Gil Puyat sign was unexpectedly changed to “Gil Tulog,” apparently for a marketing push, and social media users were stoked by the odd shift.

While some found humor in the alteration, many netizens also pointed out that road signs should be respected, finding the modification “disrespectful.”

“That Gil Tulog stunt is stupid, distasteful, and illegal. Take that down,” a netizen wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
