MANILA, Philippines — Authorities evacuated pets and stray dogs in flood-hit areas of Manila on Wednesday afternoon amid heavy rainfall due to typhoon Carina (international name: Gaemi) and the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat.

In a Facebook post, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office shared snaps of rescue operations in areas with waist-to-neck-deep floods.

“We’re all-inclusive. Ohana (Hawaiian term for family)… nobody gets left behind,” the caption reads.

Earlier, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) urged pet owners to be vigilant, especially in evacuating their pets.

“Evacuation plans must include all family members, including pets. They depend entirely on us for their survival in times of disaster,” PAWS said in a post.

The group likewise advised pet owners to evacuate their pets using makeshift carriers such as laundry baskets or basins if they do not have cages or crates.

If owners can no longer carry their pets, PAWS advised the public to unchain them or unlock their cages.

Based on the state weather bureau’s 11 a.m. bulletin, Typhoon Carina was last spotted some 345 kilometers north-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, moving north-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 205 kph.

It also enhanced the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” expected to bring moderate to intense rainfall in the western part of Luzon from Wednesday to Friday.
