Typhoon Carina: Signal No. 1 lifted in Apayao; Batanes under Signal No. 2

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Carina-induced tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) No. 1 was already lifted in Apayao but Signal No. 2 remains in Batanes, state meteorologists reported on Tuesday night.

As of 11:00 p.m. Carina’s center was last spotted  335 kilometers east northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 km/h.

Batanes remains under TCWS No. 2, where winds of greater than 62 km/h and up to 88 km/h, may be expected for at least 24 hours. This wind speed may lead to minor to moderate impacts to life and property.

Three areas namely Babuyan Islands; the northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Sanchez-Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Santa Ana, Gonzaga); and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Burgos, Bangui, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Adams) are under TCWS No. 1, which will experience 39 to 61 km/h wind speed. Minimal to minor threat to life and property, are also expected.

On the track forecast, Carina will cross the rugged terrain of Taiwan and exit the Philippine area of responsibility Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning.
