Marcos: Cagayan River flood control project to protect 60,000 residents

MANILA, Philippines — The flood risk management project in the Cagayan River is among the flood control projects that the administration is implementing to mitigate the effects of floods, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Monday in his 3rd State of the Nation Address (Sona).

Noting the effects of La Niña on many communities, he said that more than 5,500 flood projects have been completed.

“Marami pang iba ang kasalukuyang ginagawa sa buong bansa. Isa na rito ay ang flood risk management project sa Cagayan De Oro River na magbibigay ng pangmatagalang proteksyon sa 600 hektaryo ng lupa at 60,000 mamamayan,” he added.

(There are still more ongoing flood control projects throughout the country. One of them is the flood risk management project in Cagayan De Oro River that will provide long-term protection to 600 hectares of land and 60,000 citizens.)

The project also aims to strengthen the communities along the Cagayan de Oro River against the effects of climate change.

In May 2023, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, and local government leaders of Cagayan de Oro City inaugurated the major component worth P8.549 billion of the Flood Risk Management Project for Cagayan de Oro River (FRIMP CDOR) in Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao.

The flood control project is under the “Build, Better, More” initiative of President Marcos Jr. FRIMP CDOR is seen as an output “to build disaster resilient structures in calamity prone areas.”
