LUCENA CITY — An alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed and two others were captured in an encounter Thursday with government troops in Rodriguez town in Rizal province on Thursday night.

The Region 4A police said cops and Army soldiers were about to serve warrants of arrest to two rebels identified as “Balat” and “Maya” in Barangay Burgos around 10 p.m. when they were fired upon by four NPA rebels, prompting the government forces to retaliate, a spot report said on Friday.

In a brief exchange of gunfire, Balat suffered bullet wounds and died on the spot, while two other rebels, one identified as “Janna,”  were captured.

One of the guerrillas, identified as “Jomar Caraan,”  who may have been wounded, managed to escape.

Authorities are monitoring hospitals and clinics near the area to search for the wounded NPA rebel. INQ
