MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday congratulated new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his Labour Party for their landslide victory in the parliamentary election on July 5.

“We wish the new government success and look forward to further strengthening our deep and longstanding ties,” the President posted on X.

The President made the remarks after Starmer’s Labour Party won a total of 412 of the House of Commons’ 650 seats. Starmer’s victory ended 14 years of the Conservative Party’s rule.

The official X account of the UK Prime Minister said that Starmer had already spoken with various international allies and partners in his first hours of holding office.

“The UK stands ready to continue to work with them to deliver security and growth at home and abroad,” it said. —Julie M. Aurelio
